Built for Germany’s fleet of training ships, this three masted barque was launched in Hamburg, Germany in 1937; weighed in at 1784 tons, was 266 ft long, with a beam of 39.5 ft and a draft of 18 feet. She was a supply ship in WW ll, however after being badly damaged by a mine in the Baltic, she was taken over by the Americans in 1945, who gave her to Brazil where she remained as part of their navy until 1961.
In 1961 Portugal purchased her to replace their aging Sagres l, and after a refit in Rio de Janeiro she was renamed Sagres ll and since that time she has sailed as a Portuguese ambassador regularly entering sail training events and Parade of Sail Regatta’s worldwide.
The image was commissioned by the Province of Nova Scotia in 1984 for the Parade of Sail in Halifax, N.S., and appears pages on 110-111 in the book “The Marine Art of J. Franklin Wright” ©1990
Shown here is “The Sagres”, in full sail, carrying the red Maltese Cross on the foreside of her sails as she keenly slices through the waves driven by almost gale-like freshness of the wind
