The Eagle

The Eagle “A Hand Pulled Serigraph” Built as a naval training school-ship and launched from the Hamburg shipyard of Bolm and Voss in 1936, the steel, three-masted barque Horst Wessel, registering at 1634 tons, was 256.8 feet in length, with a beam of 39.4 feet, and a draft of 17 feet. Early in her career, the Horst Wessel sailed to the Canary Islands and to several European ports. At the outbreak of the Second World War, she was put into service as a supply ship. Found in Bremerhaven in 1945, she was given to the United States in reparation. Renamed the Eagle, this well-known barque is currently the flagship of the Coast Guard Academy fleet. As part of mandatory training, every cadet must spend up to two and a half months on the square-rigged vessel before graduation. In 1976, she was invited to serve as the host ship for “Operation Sail”. Over the past number of years, she has made regular appearances in the Tall Ships parades. This painting, which is a companion to the Portugese Sagres II, shows the United States Coast Guard barque Eagle with all sails set. With a fresh breeze humming through her high rigging, she sails impressively, sprinting easily over the windswept seas. This serigraph edition, done personally by the artist, measures 18×22 and is a Limited Edition of 195 signed and numbered prints.
