Noteworthy Artists That Aren’t Regularly Available To Our Gallery

Down To Earth Art Gallery has or have had original paintings by a truly impressive list of artists. This list is outside of the artists that we exhibited regularly or periodically over our 22 years. Sometimes it has only been one painting by a particular artist, other times we have been fortunate enough to have multiple pieces by the same artist. All are very collectible, most come to us from people downsizing their lives, or clients simply changing up their private collections. We always require good provenance with any artwork so our customers can be confident with their purchases. The list is always changing on our Noteworthy section of our website, so check it out often. If you are looking for a particular artist’s work, let us know, we’ll keep an eye out there for you. The paintings don’t always make it to our website, sometimes they are spoken for as soon as we get them.

Product Details

Original painting on board done in 1972 or 1973, measuring 14 x 11 inches, 17 x 14 inches including the two piece framing. The price includes the framing. The signature is very faded on this painting, and is hard to show in a photograph, but is clearly visible with tilting the painting to get the light hitting it at the correct angle. The photos of the back of the painting show a copy of what is written by hand that is actually attached to the back of the painting itself describing the purchase. Also on the back is our typed information of what the handwritten notes say, a few of the words in the original are hard to read.

Husband of famous folk artist, Maud Lewis, Everett worked as a farm labourer and as a fish peddler in his early years. After marrying Maud Dowley in 1938, he went to work as a night watchman at the Marshalltown Poor Farm.

It was Everett who encouraged Maud to paint and he bought her first set of oils.As a result of her rheumatoid arthritis she was unable to do housework, so Everett took care of the house and Maud brought in money with her paintings. As Maud aged, her hands got increasingly worse, and as her popularity grew, Everett had her draw her images on cardboard for him to cut out and her to use as templates to help facilitate productivity.

After Maud's death and his retirement, Everett made his own horse templates and began to paint maritime scenes and landscapes with animals and other subjects to try to supplement his income. His work has also become very collectible in recent years.
